WIPO General Assembly Renews Mandate for Intergovernmental Commission The WIPO General Assembly has renewed the mandate for the Intergovernmental Commission on Genetic Resources,Traditional Knowledge, and Traditional Cultural Expressions for the 2020/2021 biennium. There will be six meetings of the IGC to continue work on finalizing one or more international legal instruments before providing an update at the 2021 General Assemblies.

FICPI News – October 2019

Matthew Bryan, Director, PCT legal and User Relations Division, reported that the PCT Working Group was functioning well and that FICPI’s interventions and suggestions had been well considered and taken aboard. An amendment to the rules on erroneously filed elements in the PCT Regulations will be proposed to the General Assembly in October 2019.

URGENT – Further Scam Warning

Just this afternoon, a number of FICPI members received emails purporting to be from me which asked for their urgent assistance. These emails did not originate from me and were fraudulent. I am sending this message through as many social media channels as I can to alert as many FICPI members as possible of this illegal activity.

CET5 Studies Patent Eligibility of 3D Printed Tissues and Organs CET Group 5 (Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals) has conducted an extensive study of the issues surrounding the eligibility for patenting of inventions relating to artificial organs produced by three-dimensional (“3D”) printers.

FICPI 18th Open Forum – Your Carriage to Vienna!

The newly constructed museum building in the Vienna Ringstraße was ceremoniously opened in 1891. For the first time, most of the imperial Habsburg collections were housed under one roof, the monumental building itself being conceived as a memorial to Habsburg patronage.

30th Session of the Standing Committee on Patent Law (SCP) was held in Geneva on 24 to 27 June 2019. FICPI attended the meeting and made a statement on the “Confidentiality of communications between clients and their patent advisors” supporting a sharing session on this topic suggested for the 31st Session of the SCP scheduled for 2 to 5 December 2019.

FICPI News – Designs Special Edition

Virtual designs, which can be defined by three distinct categories: Augmented Reality, or AR, is an interactive experience in a real-world environment, in which objects that reside in the real-world are “augmented” by computer-generated perceptual information. Virtual Reality, also known as VR, is a three-dimensional, computer generated environment, which can be explored and interacted with.

FICPI met with representatives from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on 23 May 2019 to discuss various patent and trademark issues and recent FICPI resolutions. The general patent discussion as well as the trademark discussion will be reported separately.
